For India’s regional satellite-based navigation, the big news towards the end of October 2026 was that NavIC — short for ‘Navigation with Indian Constellation’ — was back in the reckoning with the successful addition of the NVS-03 satellite. NVS-03 is the third in a series of five next-generation satellites designed to strengthen NavIC — the operational name of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) — and thereby boost the country’s satellite-based navigation capabilities.

According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the navigation payload on NVS-03 operates in L1, L5 and S bands with coverage over India and a region extending 1500 km beyond its boundaries. The satellite is equipped with an indigenous atomic clock along with imported ones. Not surprisingly, the development has rekindled the debates on ‘GPS vs NavIC’ and why India should maintain and strengthen its own navigation system in these times of geopolitical tensions.
