Karbonn Mobiles is a familiar name that has been largely absent from the Indian smartphone market for several years now. The brand’s last major smartphone launch was in 2019, following which its operations ceased. However, it appears to be preparing a comeback with a new 5G smartphone, dubbed the Karbonn Rebel 5G. The launch of the upcoming handset in India has been teased via a dedicated microsite on an e-commerce platform.
Karbonn Rebel 5G India Launch Teased
The Karbonn Rebel 5G has appeared on a dedicated microsite on Amazon India. The listing hints at the homegrown brand’s return to the smartphone market after a hiatus of several years. While the Amazon microsite does not disclose the upcoming handset’s hardware specifications, price, or availability details, there are several slogans that tease its positioning.
The microsite includes phrases such as “status isn’t a specification”, “style that stands out”, and “all of the phone, none of the price shock”. Another slogan, “don’t follow, just rebel”, appears to suggest that it could be positioned as an alternative to mainstream smartphone offerings.
Karbonn also describes the Rebel 5G as being built for people who make independent choices, look beyond hype, and value substance alongside style. Key details about the handset, however, remain under wraps. The company has also yet to announce an official launch date, though it did tease that a first look at its upcoming smartphone is expected to be revealed soon.
Karbonn, notably, was an Indian joint venture between Delhi-based Jaina Group and Bengaluru-based UTL Group. The company manufactured mobile smartphones, feature phones, and tablets. It was among the few domestic manufacturers that participated in Google’s Android One initiative in India. Incidentally, the Karbonn Sparkle V was one of the first Android One smartphones introduced in the country.
One of the company’s last notable smartphone launches in the country was the Karbonn Frames S9, which debuted in May 2018. Priced at Rs. 6,790, the handset featured a 5.2-inch (720×1280) HD IPS display and ran on Android 7.0 Nougat with a custom UI on top. It was powered by an unspecified quad-core processor, coupled with 2GB of RAM.
In terms of optics, the Karbonn Frames S9 had an 8-megapixel camera at the back with LED flash and autofocus. A notable feature was the dual Twinfie camera setup at the front, with two 8-megapixel sensors. On the storage front, the Karbonn Frames S9 had 16GB of onboard storage. It shipped with a 2,900mAh battery.
